Rossini (1792-1868)
Description:
For a long time, Rossini was regarded as a "composer of comedies. However, with the revival of Rossini's operas at the Rossini Opera Festival held in Pesaro since 1980, his unknown works have been revived one after another. Gradually, it has come to be recognized that Rossini was also an excellent composer in the field of seria (serious operas). The genre of opera seria, which flourished at the beginning of the 18th century, was characterized by castrato roles, but Rossini assigned mezzo-sopranos and contralto singers in the same vocal range to the leading roles, not only allowing the singers to sing arias with superb technique, but also giving the orchestra a profound sound. These works greatly influenced the young Verdi as well as Donizetti, Bellini, and Mercadante. This box contains seven works, ranging from heavy works such as "Torvaldo and Dorlisca" and "Hermione," which have been long forgotten since their premieres, to "semi-seria" (works with comedic elements) such as "The Thieving Magpie," which ends with a happy ending. It consists mainly of live performances from Pesaro's "Rossini Opera Festival," as well as masterful performances by the Teatro La Fenice and the Opera of Flanders. Naxos Japan
