Description:
This is the only album (original release: 1971) by Dave Nordin, a downer folk singer from California. Originally released on the small Specfications label in Kentfield, Marin County, north of San Francisco. The acoustic guitar sounds fantastic. The slightly high-tone, clear voice. Without any studio gimmicks, the band spins 12 original songs with a single guitar. The delicate and flowing melodies are surprisingly pleasant to the ear, and although he simply plays the guitar, both his singing and playing have an outstanding presence, along with a certain sublime atmosphere. The self-portrait drawn in pencil on a white canvas evokes the sensitive and naive personality of the artist. Although there are shades of private folk in the guitar strumming and the loneliness of the songs, whether it is the influence of the recording location or the artist's own qualities, there is none of the darkness of acid folk that plunges one into the darkest recesses of the mind. The vocals, which are interwoven with scat, and the moderately melodic songs are sophisticated, and the guitar is expressive, as if accompanying the singing. The sense of presence, as if one were present at the recording session, is also appealing. The talent to express the image of one's own songs as a whole album is the very quality of a "singer/songwriter" of this era. There is a hint of the old West Coast psychedelia in the air, and the clarity of his voice reminds me of Jessi Colin Young. If the cover of this album's cover design is a perfect example of simplicity, then this is a must for private folk fans.
