Composers Alexander von Zemlinsky and Max Bruch, although neither countrymen nor contemporaries, are related by their common ties to Johannes Brahms. Both revered Brahms and his music, and both composed works which were obviously influenced by Brahms. This recording presents two compositions for a rare ensemble: Zemlinsky’s Trio in D Minor for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, Op. 3, and Bruch’s Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, Op. 83 (recorded here for the first time in Bruch’s arrangement for cello instead of viola).
While Zemlinksy’s Trio demonstrates orchestral dimensions and massive harmonies, Bruch’s work charms with its natural simplicity. The Zemlinsky Trio, Thomas Friedli, clarinet, Annick Gautier, cello, and Patricia Thomas, piano, offer a convincing and colorful interpretation.
