The symphonic poem "Pelleas et Melisande," based on Maeterlinck's play, and the monodrama "Expectations," performed by only one soprano singer. Although they were composed only six years apart in date, Schoenberg's depth and passion are beautifully portrayed in two very different pieces of music: "Pelleas et Melisande" in the late Romantic style and "Expectations," written after his conversion to atonal music.Singing the solo in "Expectations" is Sarah Jakubiak, an American soprano with Polish and German roots. Featuring a transformative and colorful voice, she has been acclaimed by the New York Times as "a sumptuous voice, an impressive soprano," and has performed with the Gardner & Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra on their Grammy-nominated recording of Janacek's "Glagolitic Mass" (CHSA 5165).
