Description:
A collection of videos of all four Brahms symphonies by BernsteinA collection of videos of all four Brahms symphonies by Bernstein. One is a live performance of Brahms Nos. 2 and 4 at the 1972 Tanglewood Music Festival. Bernstein recalls the performance this way:" Every time I return to Tanglewood, I am always filled with a sense of nostalgia, but this summer of 1972 is a particularly vivid memory of Koussevitzky waving the Brahms symphony that I loved so much." (Leonard Bernstein, 1972) In 1940, the young Bernstein took his first steps as a conductor under Koussevitzky here at the Tanglewood Festival. Two years later, in 1974, he conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood in a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of Koussevitzky's birth. This may have been the reason for the concert. Lenny was on fire in the finale of No. 2 and the passacaglia of No. 4, as if possessed by a fire. As in the live recordings of the complete works with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (1981, 1982), this live performance will remind you of Bernstein's very passionate approach and his affinity with Brahms. The other is Nos. 1 and 3 with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, which had a close relationship with Bernstein the following year at Tanglewood. The performance is energetic and full of energy. King International
