Description:

The Ensemble Correspondances was founded in 2008 in Lyon under the direction of keyboardist and conductor Sébastien Dosé, and has become a leader in the French classical music scene with its repertoire centered on 17th century French religious music. The ensemble has become a leader in the French classical music world with its energetic performance and recording activities, including the rediscovery of works by famous composers and other works, with a repertoire centered on 17th century French religious music. This recording features works by Lalande (1657-1726), a composer who served the court for over 40 years. Lalande studied in the choir of the church of Saint-Germain-Roxelois. A talented organ and harpsichordist, Lalande was called the "Lully of Latin" by his contemporaries, and in the spring of 1683 he joined the king's musical society (Musique de Roi). His talents were immediately recognized by the king, and he held four major posts: assistant director of the chapel, director of music (1689), composer (1690), and music director (1709), and for more than 40 years he headed the worship and chamber music groups, overseeing all major music, from the king's daily worship music to the music for the evening service. He was in charge of all major music, from the King's daily worship music to the music for the supper. Included here are three motets and excerpts from the music for the Supper, composed shortly after Lalande's assumption of his principal post.Dies Ile" was composed for the funeral of Queen Marie-Anne-Christine of Bavaria on May 5, 1690 at the church of Saint-Denis, but it is believed that it was later performed at the funeral of Louis XIV (October 23, 1715, also at Saint-Denis). The quartet is an instrumental piece, but it is also a truly eloquent performance. It is no wonder that the king favored Lalande for this piece. The "Miserere" is believed to have been performed during the Tenebrae service held on the last three days of Holy Week. It is one of Lalande's and 17th century France's greatest musical masterpieces, full of sublime beauty. King International
