HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The original marble bust by Felix Martin Miller was inspired by Tennyson’s Idylls of the King — a poetic reimagining of the Arthurian legends.

Miller, who was raised in the London Orphan School, joined the Royal Academy in 1842 upon the recommendation of fellow artist Henry Weekes. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy and other major exhibitions from the early 1840s until 1880.

Specialising in literary themes, Miller created expressive sculptures of characters from Shakespeare and Milton, blending Victorian romanticism with classical influence. This bust reflects his refined craftsmanship and narrative style, portraying a serene, idealized noblewoman from legend.

Around 80% of the process is dedicated to hand-finishing the surface. This intensive hand-finishing is essential to bring out the stone particles and enhance the natural stone feel.
