Skoryk (1938-)
Description:
Miroslav Skoryk (1938-) studied at the Lviv Conservatory and then at the Moscow Conservatory postgraduate school under Kabalevsky, and is one of Ukraine's leading composers and teachers. His nine violin concertos were written over a 45-year period, and this second collection, following the first (8.574088), includes five written between 2004 and 2014. The fifth piece has strong jazz elements, the sixth begins with a meditative theme and gradually becomes frenetic, the seventh develops the roughness of the sixth, the eighth, which commemorates the bicentennial of Chopin's birth and includes various quotations from his works, and the moving ninth, in which a lyrical theme develops dramatically, all in a single movement, is Scholik's most famous work. The eighth piece, with its various references to Chopin, and the moving ninth piece, with its dramatic development of a lyric theme, are all interesting works that clearly demonstrate Skolyk's style. Violinist Bielow, who premiered No. 6 and No. 9, is known as an excellent interpreter of Skolyk's works. Naxos Japan
