In addition to the usual maxims and scholarly quotations, the example letters relate to social interactions and parental duties are signed by women. The example diary specimen also seems to reflect a stereotype of female sensitivity: "My early morning walk in the fresh air and sunshine made me feel much better. How much beauty and pleasure there is in the world after all!"
