Why this aircraft matters
XV107 belonged to the Royal Air Force’s VC10 C1K fleet. It combined fuel tankers with long-range transport. It served VIPs, government officials and carried out aeromedical missions. It first flew in 1968. It earned the name James Nicholson V.C., honouring a Victoria Cross recipient. It helped write early chapters for No. 10 Squadron at RAF Brize Norton.
It also took part in air shows. It appeared at Farnborough and Malta, displaying both presence and skill. It carried sensitive communication gear and defensive systems. It wore unique antennas and could house infrared countermeasures for mission security.
Its type held the record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic by a subsonic airliner for 41 years. The RAF retired its VC10s in 2013 after decades of service.
