McHenry Hohnen’s Hazel’s Vineyard GSM 2022 is a vivid Margaret River take on the classic Rhône trio—bright, perfumed Grenache at the core, Syrah adding dark spice and structure, and Mourvèdre lending savoury depth. Sourced from the estate’s Hazel’s Vineyard, it leans into purity, balance and drinkability: generous without heaviness, and confidently shaped for the table.
Appearance:
Deep ruby with a vibrant purple hue through the core and a clean, youthful rim. Medium-plus concentration with a glossy sheen and slow, fine legs that hint at ripe fruit and a supple, medium-to-full-bodied feel.
Aroma:
Raspberry coulis, black cherry and plum, lifted by violets and rose petal. Beneath, you’ll find cracked pepper, dried herbs, liquorice, and a gentle earthy note—like warm gravel and garrigue—bringing savoury dimension.
Taste:
Juicy, rounded and expressive. Grenache delivers sweet-toned red fruits and a plush mid-palate, while Syrah layers in blackberry, pepper and a hint of smoked meat. Mourvèdre pulls the wine into savoury territory—earth, dried thyme, and a faint gamey edge—tightening the finish. Tannins are fine and sandy, acidity bright enough to keep it agile, and oak (if present) reads as subtle spice rather than sweetness.
Finish:
Medium-long, smooth and gently savoury, fading through red and black fruits, pepper, and dried herbs with a lingering, appetising grip.
Food Pairing:
Lamb kofta, grilled sausages, smoky BBQ chicken, beef sliders, ratatouille, mushroom burgers, or hard-aged cheeses.
