Spendiarian, Alexander (1871-1928)
Description:
Armenian composer and conductor Alexander Spendiaryan (Spendiarov in Russian) was born in the Crimea. In 1925, he conducted an 18-member orchestra of professors and students of the College of Music in Yerevan, which later grew into the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. He also devoted himself to the training of young musicians, and the orchestra later grew into the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. His works, which combine Russian and Armenian folk elements, were highly acclaimed by score publisher Belyaev and others, and he is considered the founder of the Armenian National Music School. This album includes all of his original piano pieces and chamber music with piano, as well as piano arrangements of songs by his junior composer, Sarkinyan. Most of the works are world premiere recordings. The performance is by Mikael Irapetian. He has released over 10 albums of works by Armenian composers, including his own works, and has received the Republic of Armenia's National Award for his significant contribution to the development and popularization of classical music in this country.
