Igor Levitt
Description:
Igor Levitt's newest work is a three-disc masterpiece. It is well known that the self-proclaimed "maximalist" enjoys pushing his limits, both intellectually and physically, and this project with two key works of musical modernism is a prime example: Dmitri Shostakovich's "24 Preludes and Fugue," written entirely in major and minor keys (12 x 2), is two and a half hours long. Passacaglia with DSCH," completed by Scottish composer Ronald Stevenson in 1963, is a magnificent variation of nearly an hour and a half in length using Shostakovich's namesake clef (D-Es-C-H = D-E♭-C-B ).
