Description:
Raised in a relatively affluent family by a best-selling author father, at the age of 20 he became fascinated by Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" and decided to pursue music on his own, without the financial support of his family. Although he entered the Paris Conservatory and studied under Massenet, he was more influenced by Dandy, whom he studied privately. Magnard sought the honor of being a "symphonist" and began his career as a composer with the goal of completing at least nine symphonies. However, that hope was dashed by his death in a fierce battle with German soldiers during World War I, leaving only about 20 works, including four symphonies. This album contains five works, ranging from "Suite for Orchestra in an Old-Fashioned Style," which was Magnard's first attempt at orchestration, to "Hymn to Venus" from 1904. All are beautiful and powerful works that reflect Magnard's sentiments. Naxos Japan
