The Story Behind The "Fat Charley"

During a visit to the Dry Tortugas (Fort Jefferson), Capt Bligh was inspired by the tale of a military prisoner who was sent there in the 1860's to serve his term for deserting the Union. A full moat surrounded the fort, providing protection to the fort walls from heavy seas and enemy landings. It also discouraged prisoners from escaping. One prisoner, named "Fat Charley", wrestled a 10-foot shark into the moat. The shark circled the fort for two months before the prisoners ate it. The "Fat Charley" shark skin holster is named after the legendary "Fat Charley" of Fort Jefferson.
