Bisan has become the face of Gaza for so many of us. In this oil painting, she looks back at us as we watch her through our phones, against the backdrop of everything she calls home being destroyed.
Before the genocide, she was a cheerful influencer, sharing the food and the life of Gaza. Now she has been reporting on Israel’s bombings, massacres and forced starvation of civilians in Gaza for 22 months with no break.
Sometimes her reports are so sad I can’t bear to watch the whole clip, all 2 minutes of it. There was a quote by a Palestinian in Gaza whose name I can’t remember. He said, "What we experience everyday, you cannot bear to view on your phones."
When I paint someone, I end up connecting to their emotional state. I tried to do that with Bisan. She views us with a myriad of emotions as we simultaneously view her.
What is Bisan thinking?
