Richard Boothby, founding member of Fretwork! Richard Boothby, who studied with Nikolaus Arnoncourt and Charles Medlam, is a founding member of the Purcell Quartet and Fretwork, a leader in the field of British classical music, and a master teacher of viola da gamba at the Royal College of Music in London. Fretwork member Asako Morikawa will join him to explore the music for lira viol (a type of viola da gamba that was popular in England in the 17th century) of Alfonso Ferrabosco II, a composer and viol player. Alfonso Ferrabosco II (whose father was the composer of the same name, Alfonso Ferrabosco I) was one of the most successful composers of his time in England, serving as violist to the British royal family from Elizabeth I through the reign of Charles I. Ferrabosco wrote music for the stage works of playwright Ben Jonson, songs based on poems by many poets, and many works for viol, and contributed to the development of the viol consort, which flourished in England at that time.This album features works for solo and duo lira viol by Ferrabosco, bringing this wonderful music, one of the last undiscovered gems, into the modern age with Richard Boothby's exceptional technique and sensitivity.
