Despite the fact that he was "Franz Joseph's younger brother," Michael Haydn (1737-1806) was hailed as the greatest musician of his time in Salzburg. The Requiem in C minor, a memorial mass for Archbishop Sigismund, is known as his masterpiece, but his chamber works, which are said to have greatly influenced the young Mozart, are all excellent works that express the charm of Michael Haydn at its best. The "Short Short Works" are some of the most fascinating works by Michael Haydn, and include a flute quartet, a string quartet, and a "small" concerto for viola, harpsichord, and strings. Flutist Linda Weatherill, based in both Italy and the United States, is a former principal with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Ensemble Intercontemporain. The Elisa Baciocchi String Quartet, which plays a central role in this collection of works by Michael Haydn, is an ensemble formed by the Valenti family of Lucca, Italy.
