'Bordered by the Indian Ocean to the west and Timor Sea to the north, the Northern Territory to its east and the Tanami and Great Sandy Deserts to its south, the Kimberley covers some 422,000 square kilometres of the north west of Australia.  It is one of the oldest regions of the world's most ancient land.  Its territory covers spectacular and isolated beaches; dramatic waterfalls; some of Australia's largest rivers and Spinifex covered deserts.
To make this enormous area manageable for the visitor, the Cultural Trail has been divided into the five Aboriginal language families of the Kimberley.  Language is vitally important to understanding Aboriginal heritage, as much of Indigenous heritage is still an oral history.
As Aboriginals were nomadic, there are no clear boundaries for any language family or languages and therefore the region maps are indicative only.'
