Kalevi Aho is one of Finland's most renowned composers. This album contains his Violin Concerto No. 2 and Cello Concerto No. 2. Aho wrote concertos for violin and cello respectively in the early 1980s, and now, after some 20 years, a new work has finally appeared. Aho, who had not written a violin concerto for many years, composed No. 2 at the request of Elina Vahala, and its beautiful melody is unique to Aho. It is a remarkable work dedicated to virtuoso violinist Vahalla. Meanwhile, Cello Concerto No. 2 is a newly commissioned work created in collaboration with the Naantali Music Festival and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. The five-movement work is written as a sinfonietta, and is performed seamlessly between movements, with a very impressive cadenza in the last movement.
