Such a delight! I know from the New England dealer I purchased this from that the Nancy Linton who signed it (quite proudly!) was Nancy Isabel Linton, born 1868 in Charlotte, New Brunswick, in and around where she lived her whole life. (d. 1935). I would guess she drew this during her school years, early-mid 1880s, and love everything about it--our Nancy was not afraid of bold gestures, and I imagine her as a young woman with a mind very much her own! Wonderful man in wonderful carriage, and then this horse with a head that disappears into the trunk of this marvelously untamed tree--an ink smear, maybe, but perhaps she was just not pleased with her rendering of that horse's face! (Or maybe a warning against not steering the cart attentively!) And then what feels like a piece of fantasy architecture--part Asian temple, part carriage house, all parts ornamental pleasure. Very very full of life.

Drawing 7 5/8" x 7".  Good condition, a few ink smears as evident, original to it I believe and it looks like a couple of small, clean tears coming down from the top edge, minor. Professionally framed, as found, with framer's label, New Brunswick, on reverse. Reads clean and crisp and bright.
