‘At the crossroads of contemporary art and fashion’

The sixth issue of hefty biannual Noisé is titled ‘Truth or Consequences’—a found name on the road between Marfa and Santa Fe—developed into ‘a frame for thinking about our current moment.’ The edition’s featured artists give readers a glimpse into their interior worlds, sharing their convictions, creative processes and homes through an intimate lens.

Opening the issue, Michael Stipe, frontman of American rock band R.E.M, converses with his longtime friend and collaborator Taryn Simon in his East Village studio; the pair contemplate what makes a memory, when holding on is overindulgent and the importance of privacy. Elsewhere, the quest for truth leads Murphy Guo to Larry Bell’s studio in New Mexico, where he uncovers a ‘fragility’ in the 85-year-old’s glass pieces that he had previously overlooked; in their conversation, Bell opens up about his lifelong hearing deficit and how the introduction of hearing aids shaped his subsequent work. Plus, New York gallerist Paula Cooper—who founded her eponymous gallery in 1968—reminisces on her career, teleporting readers to a New York art scene before PR agents and social media.
