This third LP by the legendary band is, in this humble shop owner's opinion, their best album, with blends of progressive rock, heavy metal and the anthemic pop sensibilities that the band were developing more day by day. It is strange to use the word 'underrated' to describe one of the biggest bands of all time, but it's an apt description for Queen's contributions specifically to the world of metal, with songs like 'Brighton Rock' marking an early appearance of palm muted tremolo picking in heavy music, as well as the proto-thrash of 'Stone Cold Crazy'. Queen are, as per usual, incredibly inventive with the studio, using delays to build a canon out of Brian May's guitar solo on 'Brighton Rock', and the band's multi-layered vocal and guitar harmonies provide the next beat in the story that bands like the Beatles and the Jimi Hendrix Experience started writing the decade before. The album also contains the classic singles 'Killer Queen' and 'Now I'm Here', two of the band's signature songs, as well as an incredibly fun medley with the songs 'Tenement Funster', 'Flick of the Wrist', and 'Lily of the Valley'. The two 'Lap of the Gods' and 'L,ap of the Gods... Revisited' tracks provide theatre-inspired prog and anthemic arena rock, respectively. There isn't a bad song on this album.
