Water Onion

Water Onion, botanically Crinum thaianum, is a striking Thai bulb plant producing extraordinarily long, ribbon-like bright green leaves that can reach 24 inches or more in a mature aquarium — one of the most architecturally bold and visually dramatic aquarium plants available. The large, onion-like bulb anchors the plant firmly in the substrate while the long, sweeping ribbon leaves arch outward and upward with a flowing, naturalistic character that suits larger planted aquariums and open-top setups where the full length of the leaves can develop freely. In open-top aquariums it occasionally produces a spectacular white lily-like flower on a tall stalk above the waterline — one of the most beautiful emersed plant blooms achievable in the home aquarium.

Planting tip: Never fully bury the Water Onion bulb — always leave the top third of the bulb above the substrate. A completely buried bulb is prone to rotting and decline. Plant in a nutrient-rich substrate where the strong root system can establish, and avoid moving the plant once settled — Crinum thaianum establishes best when left undisturbed in its position.

Growing to 24 inches or more, Water Onion is best suited as a background or specimen plant in aquariums of 30 gallons or larger where its impressive leaf length can be fully appreciated. It is a heavy root feeder that rewards a nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tab feeding with progressively larger, more impressive leaf growth. Leaves that reach the water surface can be trimmed without harming the plant — simply cutting the tips back is sufficient to keep height manageable in standard-height aquariums.

One of Water Onion’s most practically valuable qualities is its remarkably tough, leathery leaves — unlike most aquarium plants, the ribbon leaves of Crinum thaianum are resistant to the attention of herbivorous fish. Goldfish, cichlids, silver dollars, and other notorious plant-destroyers generally leave Water Onion alone, making it one of very few genuinely ornamental plants that survives in herbivorous fish aquariums. Propagation occurs naturally through daughter bulbs that develop at the base of the mother plant over time and can be separated and replanted.

Crinum thaianum is native to the rivers and streams of southern Thailand and is unfortunately now considered threatened in the wild, with only a small fraction of its natural population remaining due to habitat loss. The plants available in the aquarium trade are cultivated rather than wild-collected — keeping and propagating this species in the aquarium hobby contributes to its continued availability outside its diminishing wild habitat. In the aquascape, Water Onion creates a bold, sweeping background statement whose long ribbon leaves bring dramatic vertical scale and organic movement to larger planted compositions.
