The Americal Division - A Unique Legacy

The division returned to the United States on 21 November 1945, and was inactivated on 12 December 1945. It was reactivated on 1 December 1954 as the 23rd Infantry Division, retaining the name "Americal" as part of its official designation. On 2 December 1954 the 65th Infantry Regiment was assigned to the division. The 23rd Division encompassed geographically-separated units in the Caribbean region.

The Americal Division was originally formed in New Caledonia during World War II, combining the name from "American" and "New Caledonia" to create "Americal." The division fought in the Pacific theater, participating in campaigns in Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and the Philippines, earning battle honors and establishing a combat legacy that would continue through Vietnam.

Service and Sacrifice

The 23rd Infantry Division (Americal) was reactivated for service in Vietnam, where it conducted combat operations from 1967 to 1971. Americal Division soldiers fought in the challenging terrain of I Corps, conducting search and destroy missions, pacification operations, and combat patrols against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces.
