An Explorer’s Tribute: The "Hillary" Five Dollar Note Own a pristine piece of Kiwi history with this Series 5 New Zealand Five Dollar banknote. This issue was groundbreaking as it was the first to feature a living person (other than the Monarch) on New Zealand currency. In Uncirculated (UNC) condition, this note is a "top-pop" collector’s item, featuring original bank-fresh crispness and vivid orange, tan, and multicolored hues.
Design Features:
Obverse: Features the rugged portrait of Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. Beside him is Mount Cook (Aoraki), New Zealand's highest peak, and a Ferguson TE20 tractor—the same model Hillary used to reach the South Pole.
Reverse: Showcases New Zealand’s unique sub-antarctic wildlife, featuring the Hoiho (Yellow-eyed Penguin). The background includes native flora such as the Campbell Island Daisy and Bulbinella rossii (Ross Lily).
Security: Includes a watermark of HM Queen Elizabeth II and intricate "tukutuku" Māori weaving patterns in the background.
Printer: Produced by Thomas De La Rue & Company Limited.
The Collector’s Choice: While the later polymer versions of this note are common, these original paper-series notes in true UNC condition are becoming increasingly rare. They represent the peak of intaglio paper printing for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.
