A neglected giant in capital life is the Anacostia River. The 8.7-mile river runs from Bladensburg, Maryland, and passes just below the Capitol before merging with the Potomac at the Washington Channel. Anacostia river life has been in serious decline since the 19th Century, as District growth consumed forests and increased sewage and polluted runoff into its waters.

Despite the tremendous work ahead, organizations and committed citizens are working hard to revitalize the river and the surrounding watershed. Events like the Anacostia River Festival help create awareness of our impact on our fragile yet precious waterways. After years of absence, wildlife is slowly returning to the river, and that’s very good news to share.

About the artist:

Carlos Carmonamedina studied Fine Arts in Mexico and Romania. His artwork, which combines his love for travel, bicycles, food, old cameras and comics has been featured in many exhibitions around the world.

After living in Europe for 7 years, he is now settled in Washington DC, where he works as an illustrator and graphic designer.
