Cottonwood is excited to be offering the Sewciety Kids Sewing curriculum. This curriculum has been developed over the last 10 years by founders Megan Whitney and Meg Bulthaupt at their shop in New Jersey called Urban Sewciety.
Our team member, Gabi Warner, worked closely with "the two Megans" and has successfully taught many kids in New Jersey and Maryland using this curriculum. As soon as we at Cottonwood met Gabi, we recognized her passion for both sewing and teaching. Our Sewciety Kids program is running successfully, with lots of happy Sewciety Kids in the program, boys and girls.
The Program takes a skill-building approach, starting with simpler projects and introducing new concepts and techniques as students progress.
Kids are exposed to all aspects of sewing including: quilting, garment sewing, accessories, embroidery, applique. They can take classes for four years and never repeat a project!
The heart of the Sewciety Kids Program is After-School Classes. Students first take this Beginner Workshop to learn the basics of the sewing machine and will make a small project. Then they are eligible to enroll in the Level One Sewciety Kids Curriculum classes and any other classes geared toward kids that we offer at Cottonwood.
In this Beginner Workshop, kids aged 7+ will learn how to use a sewing machine. They'll learn sewing machine basics, including: how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and how to sew straight, even seams. Students will also complete a project to take home in this workshop. All materials included! Classroom sewing machines will be provided.
