Julian is a young 11-year old boy living in Japanese-occupied Manila during World War Two. He loves his life. His family is now wealthy and he gets to do whatever he wants. No more school. No more bullies. This war is the best thing that's ever happened to him.
But when Julian discovers his father is working for the Filipino insurgency, rebel commander Rodriguez drafts the boy to deliver a mysterious message to the Americans in Leyte. Julian and the insurgents escape the city but not before tragedy and trauma occur. To make things worse, he encounters monsters from both Filipino and Japanese folklore. His only protector, a heroic dwende named Frank only he can see.
Julian receives a beating for insubordination from Rodriguez. Before things turn truly brutal, loud Japanese whispers drive them into a strange village filled with abandoned children. While Julian can recall the horrors that they experienced there, he has a memory block of the trauma he felt in the Bayview Hotel.
Until now.
