Mini Monet painting

Why are the Lily pads purple, not green?

Impressionism (art movement) discovers the relation between subject and the shadows, were not always black or brown. The color of the shadow can be depicted as the bounce of color affected by the main color of the subject. Hence, the lily pads are purple because they are affected by the reds on lily petals and the blue from the reflection of the sky. Red + Blue = purple!

Why is the water almost black then?

This meant that the sunlight shines above the pond (probably noon time). When light is over your head, the shadow casts directly below you. With the use of dark colors, this also shows that the water in the pond is deep (like how we view holes as black).

What are the lines below the Lily pads?

These are the reflections of the lily pads floating on top of the water in a still manner.

Why are the subjects in the painting so blurred?

In an era where cameras were not available, Monet must be quick in capturing what his eyes see in a short period of time. Upon the right time where he finds the scene perfectly pictured in sight, he blobbily paints the ever-changing landscape with mix of mixed and pure unmixed color to create an overall visual effect, instead of the usual detailed manner.
