Cherry blossoms — sakura — are one of the most loved botanical symbols in the world. In Japanese tradition they stand for the fleeting beauty of the present moment: a few glorious days of bloom each year, then gone. Handmade by Natalia on the Central Coast of Australia using both champlevé and cloisonné techniques. For the champlevé flowers, recesses are hand-engraved into the silver branch before each colour is packed in and fired — the engraved lines show subtly through the translucent enamel and give the blossoms depth. The cloisonné detailing uses fine silver wires soldered into the petal shapes to hold pools of colour side by side. Each piece passes through the kiln more than ten times to build up the colour; every firing is unforgiving, so no two blossoms are ever identical. Natalia works in 999 fine silver because it takes enamel better than sterling — purer metal, richer colour.
