There are a fair number of antique theorem watercolors on paper of fruits and flowers out there (a good number of which I scoop up!) but much rarer in my experience to come across an animal, so of course I jumped right on this charmer of a horse!:) With great mottling on the body that reminds me of smoke decoration on early boxes and chests, pure black ink for hooves and ears and eyes, and a very sweet hand-drawn graphite mane. Wonderfully graphic and very empathetic, too. 

8 1/16" x 6 5/8".  Ink on wove, in very good condition. General scattered light smudges/stains from handling--minor and not at all detracting. C. 1870s or so I would guess.
