With a founding date of 1854, BJP is the world’s oldest and longest running photography magazine. But age has not caused it to stagnate—as they say, it’s ‘not your usual game of picture karaoke.’

The starting point of this latest edition is Gilbert Ryle’s concept of the ‘Ghost in the Machine’ through which he suggests that the imagined dissonance between mind and body is akin to a ghost haunting a house. It’s a timely topic, explored through a consideration of ongoing debates around AI and photography as a collaboration between humans and technology. As ever, the issue begins by highlighting upcoming exhibitions and events, from Photo London, Peckham 24 Festival, and LUMA Art Fair in London, all the way to Fotografia Europea in the rural Italian city of Reggio Emilia. Delving into interpretations and ideas stemming from Ryle’s theory are stories featuring the likes of Lisa Bernard and her new work probing at perception, ‘You Only Look Once’, and an interview with curator Alison Weaver spanning AI and the uncanny. Elsewhere, the magazine shines a posthumous spotlight on industry legend Martin Parr, and takes a peak behind the scenes of the meme account parodying professional pitfalls.
