Shinobu The Koshi-No Blended Whisky Mizunara Oak Finish 70cl
The Koshi-No “Shinobu” is an intriguing blend matured in Mizunara Oak. This type of wood is expensive and hard to craft into barrels, but the flavours that it imparts on the whisky are well-worth the trouble. Incense, gentle vanilla and wafts of herbal spices are the most apparent in this well-rounded and tasty blended expression.
Nose : Brown sugar, cream and maple syrup, with floral nuances, flakes of milk chocolate and a gentle citrus zest. Fresh wood laced with bits of sundried, charred tomatoes with flakes of ginger and a pinch of pepper.
Palate : Vanilla with a mild bit of char, maple syrup and baked apples. Nectarines, some grain, floral influences, green grapes left with some peppery notes.
Finish : Short to Medium |Sweet and tropical with bits of raisins.
Shinobu is a Japanese whisky brand established in 2017 by Ken Usami, a brewer and founder of Niigata Beer Co. Ltd. in Niigata prefecture, Japan. Although the distillery is still under construction, Usami blends Scotch malt and grain whiskies, maturing them in bourbon and sherry casks before a finishing period in prized Japanese Mizunara oak, resulting in unique flavour profiles often featuring notes of red fruit, citrus, and woody, incense-like spice. The brand is known for its use of Mizunara oak and a balance of modern techniques with traditional Japanese influences, creating a "Japanese whisky experience" despite the whiskey being sourced from around the world.
