Tiger Wardi Goby: The Broadbarred Sand-Sifter

The Tiger Wardi Goby (Valenciennea wardii) is a functional and attractive species highly valued in the marine aquarium hobby for its sand-sifting activities. It is also commonly known as the Ward's Sleeper Goby, Tiger Sleeper Goby, or Broadbarred Glidergoby. This goby exhibits a pearly white to pale body coloration marked by three distinct, broad brown or orange vertical bands ("Tiger" markings) on its sides, a pale bluish streak below the eye, and a prominent black eyespot on its first dorsal fin.

As a member of the Sleeper Goby group, the Tiger Wardi Goby is a dedicated sand-sifter. It spends its entire day taking large mouthfuls of sand, sifting it through its gills to extract small invertebrates, microfauna, and detritus, and then expelling the cleaned sand. This process is highly beneficial for aerating the sand bed, preventing detritus buildup, and reducing anaerobic pockets.

Native to the sandy and silty areas of the Indo-Pacific, this peaceful species reaches a maximum size of about 5 to 6 inches (13-15 cm). It requires a minimum aquarium size of 30 to 55 gallons with a substantial, fine sand bed (at least 2 inches deep) to support its natural feeding behavior. Like all gobies, a tight-fitting lid is mandatory as they are known jumpers.

• Diet: This goby is a Carnivore with specialized feeding habits. Its natural diet is the small organisms (copepods, worms) it filters from the sand. In captivity, its survival is challenged by the rapid depletion of this food source. It must be fed frequently (2-3 times a day) with sinking, high-quality meaty foods, including frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Sinking pellets are also accepted. A large, mature tank with an established microfauna population is essential for its long-term health.
• Reef Compatibility: The Tiger Wardi Goby is Reef Safe with Caution. It is not aggressive towards corals or motile inverts. However, its constant sand-sifting and burrowing behavior will rearrange the substrate, potentially burying or irritating low-lying corals and sessile invertebrates. For safety, ensure all **live rock is placed directly on the aquarium bottom glass** before adding sand to prevent rock collapses.
• Temperament: This is a Peaceful fish suitable for most community tanks. It should be kept singly or as a confirmed mated pair, as it will be territorial and aggressive toward conspecifics or other sand-sifting gobies. It does not typically form the classic symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp associated with other goby genera (e.g., Cryptocentrus or Amblyeleotris), but it will create and use its own burrow for shelter.
