This stunning antique Italian Cornicello horn pendant was made during the height of the Victorian era 1860's-1890's, and is crafted in natural pink/red coral with a 14 karat toggle bail component.  It features a beautiful and classic design that's rich color that is found in Mediterranean corals of the period. The coral measures 2.5 inches from end to end and the gold toggle bail shows a dark aged patina. There are no hallmarks or gold stamps. There is the natural grain pattern to the coral as well as a stress fracture seen along the drilled hole of one of the toggles. It looks to have been created as a result of the drilling process and is completely stable. Some of the original aged solder is also visible at the toggle swivel.   

The Italian Cornicello is an ancient good luck horn that is very popular in Italy. Some believe it wards off the malocchio (the Italian version of the evil eye). It has origins in Roman mythology, and some believe that it promotes good luck and fertility.
